Finding Purpose Beyond the Hysteria of Social Media Marketing

ByCharles R Benisch

Companies looking to build their brands and generate leads are turning to social media marketing at a remarkable rate. Everybody, and every company, seems to have a Facebook page, Twitter account, LinkedIn account, and a blog. They pay an employee or outsource to some self-proclaimed "Social Media Guru," and they post weekly, daily, and in some cases every few hours in the desperate attempt to find Fans and Followers. And at the end of the day, with posts in the thousands, and followers in the teens and twenties, these misguided companies find themselves shouting to an empty and uninvolved audience: generating few quality leads and failing to significantly expand their online visibility.

Don't get me wrong, social media definitely has its place in the online marketing landscape. It is a powerful tool that, when appropriately applied, has an unbridled ability to build communication between businesses and their clients, customers, and consumers. There are many restaurants out there that happily - and successfully - promote their nightly specials in these online social forums, and there are many social service providers whose coffers (and communities) benefit greatly from an aware audience.

But when venturing out into the wild and over-competitive world of Likes, Tweets,

A Quick Introduction to Managed Servers

Customers are increasingly aware of the need to back up their sites with a well managed server. Typically, the managed option often only extends to managing the operating system (and possibly hardware) of the server in question, i.e. updating the operating system with the latest security patches (something that an "intelligent" control panel, such as cPanel, can handle itself, mostly), latest package upgrades, and generally making sure the server works as intended.

In most cases, managed does not, however, cover application issues. This, however, is a crucial point: You as the customer need to be sure that the server administration side of your enterprise speaks the same language as the application development side. Nothing is worse than an eager sysadmin updating a software package without consulting the developers who, incidentally, depend on the older version for the entire site to run smoothly. With nowadays globalisation, this can cause you additional grief - often your developers are from a different company than your ISP, and often they (as is natural) will defend themselves in taking the blame. It will leave you and your enterprise crippled or hindered.

What do we advise?

Don't save money on a sysadmin.Make sure your sysadmin talks to your developers and understands what they need.Make sure your sysadmin has a basic understanding of your application in case of emergencies.Make sure your staff: your sysadmin and developers coordinate updates and upgrades.Make sure you have a working test environment where you can run the updates and upgrades in a sandbox to see if afterwards things still work the way they are expected to run.Have a teamleader coordinate your sysadmin(s) and developer(s), or take this role upon yourself.

How much is it going to cost you?

Fully managed packages vary in cost - the normal sysadmin packages that deal with the operating system only will up your budget by anything between GBP 20 to GBP 200 per month, if you want the sysadmin to be an integral part of your team and support your application as well (in terms of coordinated server management), then the price will be more to the higher end of that range, but might possibly also include some support for the application as well already.

Who to hire?

Get someone with experience. There are sysadmins out there who have decades of experience and know the do's and dont's, and there are sysadmins who consider themselves divine just because they have been "into linux for 2 years". A sysadmin is not someone who jumps at the first sight of an available package upgrade and yum installs 200 dependencies to claim he has a system up to date. A sysadmin is someone who understands the implications of a) upgrading and b) not upgrading. A sysadmin will weigh these pros and cons and explain them to you before making suggestions as to what to do. A sysadmin is someone you trust to even take this decision off your shoulder so you can run your business instead of having to worry whether the next admin cowboy is going to blow up your server. A sysadmin is someone who knows not only how to keep a system alive, but also how to bring a failed system back to life.

Small Business Web Hosting: What Is Virtual Private Server (VPS) Hosting?

ByTeresa A Douglas

Web hosting has diversified in the last years. Whether you have a personal blog or an online business, there are many hosting plans to choose from. A growing number of companies offer virtual private server hosting. This service is a flexible and economical hosting solution that fits the need of almost any kind of website. Virtual web hosting is a cheaper option because you won't have to pay for a dedicated server to host just your website.

A virtual private server is a dedicated section of a server that is divided into hundreds of mini-servers. This type of hosting gives you complete control over the dedicated section of the server, which acts as your own operating system. Virtual web hosting offers the power and functionality of a dedicated server but at a lower cost.

Most companies offering virtual server hosting allow multiple dedicated IPs, unlimited domain hosting, and private name servers. You can also decide whether you want Plesk or cPanel for your admin interface. Each virtual server is private, and access to hardware resources is managed by the "host" server. With virtual web hosting, you can use a web based interface that allows you to backup, manage, restore, and reinstall a virtual private server without technical support.

A virtual server will benefit you in terms of flexibility and security. This service can provide you with all the benefits of having your own server at an affordable price. Before you purchase a virtual web hosting plan, try to determine how much traffic your site will receive and then make sure that your hosting plan is big enough in bandwidth terms to suit your needs.

Virtual private servers have many advantages. First of all, they are less expensive than dedicated server plans. Secondly, operators maintain full administrative access to their section. Network infrastructures and hardware are maintained by the hosting provider. Most companies selling virtual web hosting offer a full set of tools to help you manage servers at any skill level.

Another advantage of virtual private servers is that they are more secure than dedicated servers. Because of its low cost and increased flexibility, virtual private server hosting is ideal for small businesses. A virtual private server uses a technique called virtualization to separate the hosting environment for each and every user on a shared system. Thus, a virtual private server protects the security of your website against the new generation of online threats.

Virtual private server hosting is one of the most popular types of small business hosting plans. Comparing different web hosts and learning about the main types of hosting is the key to finding a plan that suits all of your business needs. Some companies offer discount web hosting plans with premium features, so make sure you do proper research to get the best deal out there.

Getting The Right Shared Hosting For Your Website

ByJustin Knights

There is a lot of information that you can get online nowadays to help you choose a good web hosting company. While information can be obtained easily, you must be able to find out about the critical information that can help you decide. Thankfully, there is only a small amount of important information that will really help you when you choose your hosting company.

A good value is the most important thing to look for in a hosting provider but a cheap hosting might not be the best option. Never choose based on the price of the hosting alone. Paying less is not often the best option when it comes to web hosting. There are other things to consider as well besides the price of the hosting package.

If you come across a company that uses dramatic headlines, you should stay away from them. They are just using amazing advertisements to get your attention. What you want is a host that can provide you reliability and good service. Judging the hosting packages based on a headline is not a good idea. You will have to dig a little bit deeper in order to find out more about a particular company. By knowing more about a company, you will be able to know if they are good enough to support your online activities.

The most important thing to do when you look for a hosting company is to ensure that they are a genuine company that is trustworthy. This can judge by looking how long they have been in business. It is very easy to set up a hosting company in the internet nowadays and that is why you need to be very careful with the one that you are planning to use. Be sure to look for one that has been around for long period of time. This means that they are providing good service as they have a constant increase in the number of customers.

It is really not that difficult to find a good hosting company that can be a good partner for your online endeavours. You just need to shop smarter and do not fall into the trap of nasty online business owners who are only out there to make quick money from you. Always check the information that you obtain from one source with several other sources as well to ensure that the information match. This way, you will know that there is more than one person saying that the hosting company is a good one. Reading reviews as well as asking questions in forums will be a good way for you to achieve this. With time, you will be able to filter out all the companies that are not able to provide you with a decent service.

The Importance Of A Right Domain Name

ByJustin Knights

Promoting your business on the internet is a great way to expand your business and you will need a website to achieve this purpose. There are many things that need to be done in order to promote your business online and getting your domain name is one of the most important steps of all. In fact, it is the first thing that you need to do if you want to create a website for your business. The domain name will represent your business and it will also be the name where your visitors will remember when they search online. So, a good domain name is very important for the success of your business.

Some rules needs to be applied when you choose a domain name. The first rule is to select a short name. This is important so that your visitors will remember your website address easily. A long name could make it difficult for them to remember and that would do no good to your business at all. A domain name that relates to your products and services is also another important factor to follow. This is a basic rule as the customer will be able to think about your website when they want to the related product.

Selecting the ideal domain address or name will allow you to maximize your traffic. A well chosen name will be able to deliver you high quality traffic of visitor who is already interested in the items that you are selling. This way, the possibility of them purchasing will be rather high. Now, this is vital because you don't get to change your domain name once it is purchased. You can change it after one year but it will not look good for your business.

To check if your desired domain is available, you will need to check with the web hosting company. Web hosts will allow you to search and check if the name that you desire is still up for grabs. Many of the good names might not be available anymore because domains are hot property nowadays. There are many people who would buy them up and make a profit out of it later on.

In case you found out that the name that you desire is no longer available, do not despair. You can use different variation for alternative choice. Try to play around the key words that are related to your business and see what you may come up with. You might be surprise by the amount of choices that you can get. Think innovatively in order to get a name that strikes right into the mind of a customer. A good first impression is vital so that customers will remember your name easily. In addition, you might also think of the originality of your domain name as well. If not, people will think that you are a copy cat trying to imitate some other online business.

Once you find the right name that you are pleased with, you can register the domain easily. The steps that you need to take are pretty simple. You just need to key in some personal details and that's it. Also, make sure you try on a few different registrars in order to get a competitive price for your domain name. Some registrar might be providing cheaper prices. With this, you will be able to save some of your cost. Once you have registered your domain, all is left for you to do is to build your website and market it well on the internet.

What To Look For in a Web Hosting Services Provider

ByAaditya Sardwal

Finding a good web hosting services provider doesn't have to be hard. You just need to find one that meets your requirements in several areas. See below for the features or key areas for evaluating a good web host for your website.

Look for Support Options like Chat, Phone and Emails

Of course, free or extremely cheap web hosting offers catch our very attention, however, the moment something goes wrong, you discover why picking up a host with support options matter so much. Never pick a host solely on price factor. Look for hosts with as many support options as you can find. It's always good to have someone by your side, when things seem to go wrong, right?

Disk Space

It is the amount of space that you are allocated for your website. There are some hosts which offer unlimited space options while others allocate space at a cost. You just need to ensure that you always pick a plan that offers you at least 20% to 30% more space that you require at present so that you do not have to face any trouble when you want to expand the space of your website.

Bandwidth

It is, in a layman language, the amount of data that a website can pass to its users over a period of time. Here also, you should look out for a plan that suffices your present bandwidth requirements and also don't trouble you when your site goes over the allocated bandwidth. Remember that videos and graphics take more bandwidth than plain HTML on your website. And, with so many web hosting services providers in the market, you should not face much of a trouble in finding an ideal partner for bandwidth needs.

Best Deals on Domain Names and Related Services

A number of services providers also offer services like domain names and content management. However, there is no guarantee that you would get the best deals with this host only. You can also look out for other names for these services so that you do not end up over paying. It's always good to have options and comparing them and then, picking the best option available.

I have tried my best to put all the must-haves here so that you find that perfect web host for your website. You can also refer to other online resources to find out more on how to pick an ideal web host for your website.

At Olive Web Hosting, we offer a range of services including cloud computing hosting, web analytics, domain name registration, backup services and e-business solutions. We understand your needs and therefore, we give you those tailor-made services, that too, within your budget. You can also see us, http://www.olivewebhosting.com/Backup-Services.asp, for world-class backup services in Delhi.

Things To Avoid When Choosing Your Web Hosting

ByJustin Knights

Web hosting is an industry that is growing rapidly. It is a gold mine on the internet where many web hosting providers are out there to make a fortune. With this in mind, there are certainly some companies out there that are not entirely honest as they run their business with less dignity. Therefore, customers must choose wisely in order to avoid getting cheated by hosting companies that are out there to trick them of their money. There are a few ways to find out about the reliability of a hosting provider and looking in forums or blogs that are related to web hosting would be a god choice. By knowing the common pitfalls of this industry, you will be able to avoid choosing the wrong host as well.

Firstly, you should avoid companies that do not offer any trial period. Some companies will provide 30 day trial periods while some do not provide at all. Therefore, you must go for companies that come with a trial period in order to test out their performance.

Then, you must also pay attention to the type of web application and software that they provide you. You must be aware of companies that are limits their users with only some of the applications like Fantastico and Joomla 1.2. In addition, outdated software and application will also be more vulnerable to virus or hackers.

There are also companies that charge you hidden fees. This mainly occurs when you want to cancel your contract with them when you found out that their service is no up to your standard. So, you have to read the terms of service in detail in order to find out if they have these unreasonable charges.

The customer support is another department that you must look into. A company that provides good customer support is vital for your online success. Be sure to test them out by chatting them via live chat or calling them on the phone to see how well they respond to your enquiries. A host that comes with a poor customer support should be avoided.

One last thing to look out for in a web hosting provider is their claims over the uptime that they can provide. Some companies will claim that they can provide 100% uptime. These companies are lying. There is no such thing as 100% uptime. Even Google's website does not have 100% uptime. An uptime of 99% is good enough.

Basics of VPS and Cloud Hosting

The web hosting industry has undergone several changes in the last few years. Several new types of hosting plans have come into the market, which provides its users various unique benefits. Of all the hosting plans that are available today in the market, there are very few which have created a niche for themselves. Cloud Hosting and VPS Hosting are among those web hosting plans that have garnered maximum attention lately. Here's a brief intro about both of them.

VPS Hosting stands for hosting carried out from a virtual private server. This technology basically permits the service provider to divide and make a number of virtual servers from one physical server. It is also commonly said that users who choose this hosting package, enjoy the benefits of dedicated hosting at cheaper rates than normal dedicated hosting. There are several advantages a user has if he opts for VPS Server hosting. It allows the user to have the freedom of accessibility and security. VPS Server hosting also provides its user with complete control and access of administrative tasks, including changing server configurations, installing software, hosting many websites and rebooting the server. It is rightly said by many that it is the ideal solution for users who want control and flexibility of dedicated hosting at shared hosting prices.

Cloud Hosting is another hosting plan that has received much attention from the internet industry. In fact it is considered by many as the next generation of hosting industry. Users who opt for Cloud Server hosting have the resources of several clustered servers. This technology allows enterprises to have added space for its data, while not having to worry about its storage and maintenance. Though Cloud Server hosting comes with multiple advantages, there are few that are worth mentioning. This hosting plan allows users to improve or reduce his server resource at will. Depending upon the traffic a website gets, the user can either add or cut his server needs. The other major benefit of this hosting plan is that the user only needs to pay for the amount of service he uses. And lastly, this hosting plan generally comes with an assurance of nearly zero downtime.

Users are first suggested to evaluate their website hosting requirements, before selecting VPS or Cloud Hosting services in India. Finding a VPS or Cloud Hosting service provider in India will not be very tough, as all major web hosts now offer these hosting plans.

Learn How To Profit From Reseller Hosting

Different organizations offer varied domain Reseller Hosting plans. Individual persons or business entities may agree to sell products or services of another company in order to share accruing profits made from each sale. This approach is certainly tailored to benefit both parties. The hosting enterprise would be able to make money by selling more products while the individual reseller makes profits from supplemental income from third party engagements.

Note that with such arrangement, most resellers are able to make significant profit to sustain their businesses. The amount of profit he or she would make is largely dependent upon what he or she pays for the products. This is because they have absolute control over the amount they mark on the prices of the hosting company. The host company may help promote their resellers by offering cost effective domains.

Majority of domain vendors offer plans that come complete with readily designed website. With such an offer, a reseller is able to quickly activate it. He or she does not have to worry about payment gateways or struggle with merchant accounts. Usually, the hosting company would be responsible for round the clock customer care services plus processing of all payments.

Some plans may need prior funding while others allow resellers to make single payments annually. Deduction from their earnings is based on the total cost of products sold, hence reducing start up expenses considerably. This is a great way to profit from your business with or without extra overheads.

Depending on how you agree with your domain host, it is possible for them to have a single log in URL for the reseller accounts irrespective of their number. This would imply that whenever you have a hosting reseller account, plus other accounts, you can be able to manage all of them from a single dashboard.

If you desire to be an SSL vendor, there is no recourse. From your domain host, you should be able to select from a variety of choices to put into your catalog. From there, you can sell many items on your platform including site builders, domains plus a myriad of products to market.

To be a host does not demand technical know-how. The network infrastructure would be maintained by the data center operator. The owner of the dedicated server would carry out all the necessary configurations besides securing and updating it. Your responsibility in facilitating Reseller Hosting remains that of interfacing with your client base.

Backing Up Your Server

When we mention backups, everybody will think, "hey, my data is safe anyway, isn't it? I mean this is a reputable ISP, sure they have enterprise disks and RAID, and whatnot? Or don't they?!".

There are two important nota bene / caveats when it comes to backing up your data, be it on a Virtual Private Server (VPS) or on dedicated servers:
Don't assume anyone but you is going to back up your data.Don't assume that even if your ISP backs up your data that you shouldn't as well.

By default, it is safe to assume that your provider does not back up your data. Typically, explicit backups will cost you some additional money, and even then you are well advised to ask your ISP what they are backing up, and how, how often they do it, and where the data is being kept.

A couple of bad backup solutions:
different disk (or, worse even, partition) on the same machine;some external drive, like a USB disk;

A couple of decent/workable backup solutions:
standby server in the same DC;
ftp space on some other machine in the same DC;making sure disks are RAID: while this is not exactly a backup solution, redundancy gives you a chance for online recovery when a RAID set is rebuilding after a disk failure. RAID should be your standard disk setup with every server;

A good backup solution:
generation driven backup strategy on a server or backup system (such as IBM's TSM which can backup to SAN and tape, or bacula, which is free of charge and can perform full/differential/incremental backups for example) in a different DC;

Any ISP employing one of the bad solutions means that you should explicitly look for a service that allows you to at least back up your data somewhere else as well, in a different data centre. You should also consider this when your ISP can only offer a backup solution that can be considered workable at best. If your ISP, however, can prove that they are using an enterprise solution to back up your data, then you can assume that your data is safe - nevertheless you should back up your data as well. At least make dumps and tgz archives of your most important data, download it, and store it safely away, burn it to CD/DVDs, etc. Be prepared for the worst case, backups can go corrupt, you might accidentally delete all instances of one file desperately needed, etc.

Backing up is only half the story - data backed up is pretty, but you also need to be able to restore it. Make sure to test your backup/restore strategy. Back up data, restore it, see if it works. Repeat this in regular intervals, and repeat it whenever you do major changes to your application or when you need to document milestones, etc. Ask yourself, how much is your data worth to you? What if you lose everything? When it comes to your data, it comes to your online presence, your enterprise and company: Don't assume. Make sure.

Cloud Hosting - Best Alternative to Traditional Web Hosting As for Today

ByPaul Carrey

Cloud hosting is today becoming one of the best alternate to traditional hosting solutions which were supposed to be costly. With changing times and technology it is now easy to get better services at cheap rates and this is the reason why cloud hosting is becoming amazingly popular all over the web world. You will not believe that some of the companies and firms who were previously using dedicated servers to host their online businesses are fast switching to these hosting solutions due to various advantages and benefits they get at cheaper rates.

Cloud hosting services provide a platform for new web based developers. One of the main problems faced by start-up companies is purchasing and maintaining hardware. They need the resources to support the development work and release of their product. With this service, they are eliminated from investing only on hardware. Cloud server offers the same processing power as a physical server. Just purchasing enough space in the cloud is enough. So, it is cheaper compared to traditional web hosting services.

Most of the start-up companies face tight budget, they can purchase depending on their current needs. They can go for additional purchase of space when marketing their final product. This elasticity is another great thing why you need it.

Cloud Hosting is a paradigm shift in hosting plans

The evolution of online world has been marked by the revolutionary concept of this hosting that has indisputably obliterated data storage and management woes from the psyche of website owners. Cloud hosting contrasts itself from conventional hosting in terms of payment mode, availability, reliability, scalability and service terms.

Site owners no longer are required to build their own backups, involve in buying or leasing server space, renew contract on annual basis, cough up extra payment to protect against sudden traffic surge, and suffer from server downtime for maintenance. Cloud hosting assures of full uptime plans based on demand with payments determined by the consumption of server infrastructure and computing power. The servers with excess disk space, memory capability and unlimited processing power are clustered together to form the cloud.

Basic difference between single server hosting and cloud hosting services

Cloud buzz is all over the internet. Let's see the main differences between shared hosting and cloud hosting. In shared website hosting, one single server hosts multiple websites. In a dedicated hosting, one server will serve only one website. Both dedicated and shared website offer one server only. In a cloud hosting, a website could be running on any number of servers at a given time.

In traditional web hosting services, the host asks you to pay certain price for the computing resources. The big disadvantage of traditional hosting services is that even you do not use the allocated resources you have to pay. The best part of it is it is on a Pay per use basis. So, you can pay only the resources that you used.

Domain Web Hosting

is a term used to describe what people are looking for, when they decide to use a web hosting company, where you add a domain name. Some people have the misconception that when you want to use a hosting company, you need a company that also supports domain names. In fact if it is paid hosting, the hosting provider has to be able to have the function to add on domains.

When you buy a domain name, you buy it and register it with a domain name registrar company, usually for one year, but you have the option to buy for up to ten years if needed. You have the option to make the Who is private on the domain name, which means that if someone done a search to see who owned the domain name, this would be hidden.

Now you have your domain name you have two options, you can either park your domain name, or turn it in to a website, using web hosting. With parking you have to set the name servers from your domain name registrar, to that off the parking company. Domain parking is a good idea if your domain name gets a lot of direct type in traffic. What this means is, if you have the exact keyword dot com, with a good amount of searches per month, and if a user were to type that in to Google, then it would usually go straight to your parked page. Or alternatively you can set the name servers to a web hosting company.

In the long term it is much better to turn your domain name in to a website, because you have lots of different options for developing your site. Usually with a parked domain name, all you would get is a static page, that is just full of ads, and it does not look user friendly.

Using web hosting you have hundreds of different templates to choose from to design your site, this could be in the Wordpress platform, Joomla, design your own template with html and so on. Basically you can design the web site the way you want to, so you are not restricted to how it will look. It is also much better in the long term for your site in terms of search engine optimisation, ranking is made easier with multiple pages on a site, not just one static page like a parked page.

All this is possible because of the features you have within your web hosting account. They offer multiple domain names that you can add to your account, multiple email addresses for the different domain names that you have. Most companies have the Cpanel which helps the novice user get used to working with hosting.

Another great aspect of most companies is they use a program called Fantastico which lets you create your website from scratch, building the database and all the necessary files that are used to put your website live on the internet. And do not forget the twenty four hour live telephone and chat they provide, if you do not find this in a company, I would look elsewhere.

Free Web Hosting: A Bad Idea

ByBrad K

We will discuss here why free web hosting is a bad idea. It all starts with the word "free", and you will learn why these web hosting companies market their web hosting as free.

Reason 1: Loaded with advertisements

Everyone that owns a website is usually looking to do one of two things; either make money or get a point across. For most of us, it is making money that lures us into thinking of making a website. The money made can come from a few different ways, but we will focus on advertising and selling products as the main ways websites make money. With free web hosting providers, the companies will load your websites with advertisements in order to make money. You might be thinking "don't I get a cut of that?", and the answer is absolutely not.

In order to run and house web servers there needs to be employees, a physical location, and room for error. In order to pay for all this, since you are not paying for the web hosting, they have to think of original ways to make money. Once your site is on their server, they have the right to post ads on your site, post popups and pop-unders, and monetize your site to the way they want.

Reason 2: You can get blacklisted to the spammer directory

Being that spammers are notorious for using free web hosts, you may be perceived as being a part of the spamming, so your site will get blacklisted. You may ask "how is this possible?". It is because when you are on a free server, everybody on that server shares the same IP address, meaning that everyone who is on that IP address is responsible for the content that one site in that server may put out. So if one person that is on the server decides they want to spam, then everyone gets blacklisted and your in the dark.

My advice is, if you decide that you are going to develop a meaningful site in any way, it is your best choice to go with a paid form of web host. There are plenty out there for under $5 a month, and spammers are less likely to use these types of hosting plans.

Reason 3: Hacking danger

So now if you decide to go with a free hosting company, your information is available to the public, and anybody else who has access to that server. This means that anybody with the knowledge of hacking can get on to your site and do what they want to it. Of course it is illegal, but in the world of the internet you can never be safe. The internet is everywhere, including very remote parts of the world, and you know how bored the people in remote Siberia probably are. There are people that hack websites for fun, and the best forum for that is free hosting plans.

Reason 4: Little to no customer support

When you pay for a web hosting company, you are not just paying for the safety and security of a managed server, you are paying for the support too. With a free hosting plan, since you are not paying for the services, there is not reason for these companies to go out of their way to help you out. like I said before, they are in it to advertise on your website and make money off of that. They don't care if you can't log in to your control panel, because they just want to make money and be left alone.

Conclusion:

As you can see, using a free web hosting service can be annoying and not worth the time. They will be loaded with advertisements unrelated to your business, and the servers are not guaranteed any uptime. Spammers share the same IP address as you, making you a target for being blacklisted if things go that way. If you are just starting out, you can get very affordable hosting plans with great support. All in all, stay away from free hosing sites if you want to build any sort of reputable business.

Benefits Of An Offshore Cloud

ByClaire Katherine N

Electricity for the home or business can be provided by a generator located on site. In most cases, however, the power plant is located at a site remote from the point of use. The same may now be said of computing facilities. This is called a 'cloud', or Virtual Data Center. The term 'offshore cloud' refers to computing services that are provided remotely using equipment that is located in a foreign country.

In the same way that individuals and organisations purchase gas or electricity from an external company, so do VDC customers purchase their computing services. This arrangement has a number of benefits. Having an offshore cloud has all of the same benefits, plus a few others.

One of the main advantages of using a VDC is cost savings. Companies no longer have to invest huge sums of capital to purchase equipment, nor do they have to employ armies of experts to operate and maintain their systems. The customer pays just for the services and applications that they require and no more. Purchasers can expand and contract the computing services they use in response to seasonal fluctuations in business activity. By sharing computer time and physical plant with other users, the burden of electricity costs is also shared, offering the purchaser further savings.
Using a VDC enables the purchaser to move with the times without risking valuable capital. Computing technology is evolving at a phenomenal rate and will continue to do so. Working within a VDC framework makes it possible to keep pace with advancements without having to buy new hardware and retrain staff.
In addition to lower costs and ease of updating, offshore VDCs offer additional advantages. Purchasers can take advantage of the ability to deal with host countries that have lower rates of income tax. This translates to more cost savings.
There's more to doing business with a foreign VDC than cost savings. This set-up offers the purchaser the chance to shop around for friendly regulatory environments. A company whose business is providing web-based gambling, for example, will be better off working with a host country with more flexible laws. Some countries have stronger privacy laws than others. This can be reassuring where data confidentiality is a serious concern.
Companies with interests in more than one country can benefit from a VDC. Everything from email to document storage to banking can all be held under one roof. This makes communicating between offices in the various countries much less complicated.

Transferring to an offshore cloud can solve a lot of problems for a company that has evolved from the merger of one or more organizations. Computer applications can be purchased off the shelf. There is no need to try and meld incompatible legacy systems. A unified VDC can make the new organization settle in much more efficiently. Round the clock availability and support from expert staff, failover capabilities and real-time data mirroring can be included in the package. The world of business has gone global and is getting smaller all the time.

The Process Of Reseller Hosting

When you own a large domain space, the option of reseller hosting is something for you to consider. This will allow you to provide domain names and spaces for larger businesses, without having to do any hosting services. Therefore, you are going to earn income, without having to worry about doing the work on your own.

As the resale host, you will choose the amount of space each company gets. So, for busier companies or those which do a lot of business, you may wish to provide them more space. This can lead to higher income, more visitors, and less work for you to have to do when managing spaces.

Choosing reputable companies is also a factor which has to be considered. By doing this prior to making the decision you are going to be left with the most popular, and get most traffic through your space. In turn, this can also lead to larger pay outs without having to worry about doing any work.

The type of companies you bring in is also a factor to think about. Depending on your space, and what you want to utilize it for, the types of businesses you sell space to might also vary. For this reason, you must consider this prior to host space being offered.

The amount you want to earn is also a crucial factor. This should be discussed before hand with the individual companies buying space on your site. By discussing with them, you will know what to expect, and what they should expect as well.

Considering all these factors will ensure the best decisions are made. It will also allow you to narrow down who to offer space to, and how much of it to give. By taking the time to consider this it will allow hosts to get the greatest returns.

Taking the time also means you will not have wasted space. The more you have used up, the less is just sitting there without use. Therefore, a host has to think about this as well prior to considering how to lease out space.

All these factors should be considered by reseller hosting specialists. That will lead to the most returns and the best companies in the hosting site. It will also ensure no wasted space is left unclaimed, and that all your free hard drive or internal space is being used by other companies to host their online business and site.

Data Center Industry: A Great Return on Investment

The Datacenter Dynamics Conference took place in New York City. Some of the major take-aways from the conference include green data centers, a new battery cabinet, and the New York data center scene as a whole. All the talking topics only further advance the notion that the data center industry is producing an unbeatable return on investment.

One field that is benefiting from the expansion of facilities throughout the United States is local grid energy companies. Major online companies such as Google are employing and funding renewable-energy developers for 20 years. By investing in green-energy sources Google is able to assure developers that their projects will not lose money. This green-power purchase strategy has led to 100% carbon free facilities since 2007. Now Google is focusing on energy-efficiency and carbon offsets unfortunately noting a net loss. On the other hand, while Google loses money to stay green other companies are benefiting from this shift. Then again, a Google spokesperson predicts that traditional energy prices will raise making their current strategy has a wise business decision.

Another company is raking in the money thanks to the increase in demand for more energy-efficient batteries and data centers. One company launched their new product at the conference. The new cabinet features intelligent controls and easy battery monitoring resulting in longer-lasting batteries. This new battery evacuates the heat out of the cabinets automatically. Major datacenter companies are in talks to purchase the new batteries for their ever expanding facilities.

A location many companies are looking to grow their infrastructure in is New York. New York topped the list of most popular destinations for data center expansion according to survey results. Other major cities being considered are Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, San Francisco, and Phoenix. In the same survey 90% stated they plan on adding data space in 2012. An even more promising statistics expresses that 92% will expand in the US. It is without a doubt that the industry is going to continue to grow as cloud computing and outsourcing IT infrastructure becomes the norm.

As the 2012 is projected to be a groundbreaking year for most industry companies, it goes with saying that 2011 was a stellar year for them as well. A number of large acquisitions by not data center-centric added to financial success for much of the industry. With major companies buying and building data centers there has been a refocus on investing in infrastructure companies. Due to the small companies being bought out, mid to large data center companies' generated adequate cash flow to further expand them.

At the conference it became clear that the financial community's apprehension towards data center space is gone. With increasing demand for space, many new markets are continuing to outpace supply making it a good day for server-related companies.

Server Crash - What Now?

So now it has finally happened, your server has crashed beyond repair. It won't boot, or what it boots has little resemblance with what you expect it to come up with, remote console shows a manual file system check is needed, grub cannot find a kernel, your root partition is gone, or your Windows says it cannot find any disks anymore, and other nightmares you thought could certainly happen to everyone else but definitely not to you.

Now what?

First of all: DON'T PANIC!

For those of you who are familiar with Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy this advice sounds more than familiar, and it is in fact the very first action to take. Panic will cloud your mind, and you will take much longer for everything you do than when you do it calmly and even take the time to think twice before you do anything at all.

Assess the situation: Are you able to try fixing it yourself, or are you not familiar enough with the error displayed, or the symptoms showing up?
Do not mess with the system too much: Even if you do not have a managed server and therefore have to have a look yourself first, you are not on site, and you therefore do not have the means to do a hardware repair, apart from the risk of the damage becoming larger the longer the remote actions take, and the more attempts at salvaging are being made.
Ask your provider to step in: If you have a managed server, they will have to handle it anyway, and depending on the SLA in place, will provide you with a new machine in between, a failover solution, etc. If you do not have a managed server, your provider is still your best guess for actual on site operations as they are the ones who have physical access to the server, and even if they are not proficient enough, they should be able to bring someone in faster than you who can have a look at the machine. If you have hired your own sysadmin (who is not on site either, however), your ISP and your sysadmin can communicate to discuss the best course of action.
In the meantime, have your provider - with or without respective SLA - set up a new server, a replacement VPS, a shared hosting account, in other words, anything that allows you to bring back your site saying "We are performing maintenance / crash recovery / you name it", i.e. something that brings you back in touch with your customers so they are aware you are on to the situation. Use twitter, facebook, your customer portal (if you have one on another machine), etc. to let your clients know who of them is, and why they are affected. Customer relationship management here, and proper communication with your customers is key: we are all humans, and technology is far from being perfect. Sharing your steps to remedy the situation and actively keeping your clients in the loop can in fact help you raise customer loyality.
Depending on the interim solution, get ready to bring your backups back online (you do have them, don't you?). In a managed environment, your provider should have them, but in fact no matter what you should have an external backup somewhere as well.
Once you have a new production server (or the old one repaired), and have set it up with its operating system, updated it to the latest patchset and security fixes, and brought it to a state that matches the environment before the crash, use your backups and perform data recovery. Do not go live again yet, however:
Test, test, and test again if everything is working according to specs and expectations. Naturally, you will want to be back online as fast as possible. On the other hand, you want to avoid nasty surprises such as inconsistent databases, mismatched orders, invoices, etc. It is up to your judgement to find the right balance here.
Once everything is back to normal, write up an Incident Report and send it out to all customers who were affected by the outage, and handle compensation as per your own SLA and TOS.

Cloud Servers: Try Before You Buy

ByClaire Katherine N

Cloud server hosting appears to be the next big thing for peoples information storage and website needs. It has many advantages that are attractive to big businesses that would otherwise have to store and maintain their own servers. With this new technology businesses have the opportunity to have more space for data while not having to worry about its storage and maintenance which is a huge appeal.

This technology is certainly new so understandably many people will have concerns over the security of these types of servers and whether or not it is actually a viable option. Technology experts believe that this is the way forward and do their best to reassure people of its viability, however, the best way to really get an understanding of the product is to spend some time testing it out.

The most common way available to fully test it is to look for a company offering a free trial. There are several companies on the internet who offer this and use it as a way to get more people to use this service. While it may be a marketing ploy for the companies there is no reason why the customer can't benefit too. This is a perfect opportunity to see if this type of thing will be suitable to your needs.

In most cases you will get a five to seven day trial in which you can use to really assess the technology and the services you will be getting from the company supplying it. This is also an opportunity to try out several different companies to see how they differ and if any can offer you better and more suitable features.

More and more companies are offering a free trial to new customers wanting to test out cloud server hosting. Of course with these trials they will not offer the full range of features. You wouldn't be expected to transfer all your data and websites over straight away because it would be a lot of hassle to move it all back if you were not satisfied with the new technology.

The idea here is that you spend the time to gain full knowledge of the uses of this technology. You could transfer a small amount of data and see if that will suit you while testing out how secure it will be. This is billed as being similar to having dedicated servers rather than shared so if security is an issue for you, you may find this bit of information useful. Separate companies will operate differently so this is where the free trial comes in handy.

Even at first sight, there does appear to be a lot of advantages to this new technology and these can be tested wherever trials are offered. You have the option to easily scale up, depending on your storage requirements, as well as the fact that you will not have to worry about maintaining physical servers on your premises.

On the face of it the cloud server hosting appears to be the future of hosting and data storage. Of course with all new products of this nature many people will be apprehensive which is why a free trial will be very beneficial.

Why Dedicated Servers Mean Less Risk to Your Business

Dedicated servers are the obvious choice for any business wanting to reduce risk, both in terms of the obvious benefit of keeping servers safe from physical damage, and also in terms of reducing the risk of losing custom due to a slow or unavailable website.

To begin, it helps to explain a little bit about what a dedicated server is exactly. As standard, your company website will be hosted on a server provided by a web hosting company along with other websites. For personal websites or for very small companies this approach to web hosting provides an adequate service at a relatively low cost. However, for all but the smallest of companies this method of sharing web space simply will not do. When a server issue occurs, which will inevitably happen from time to time on a shared server, medium and large companies are put at risk of much bigger losses than their smaller counterparts. A dedicated server, on the other hand, is a server that is for you and you alone.

Think for a moment about the revenue that your company brings in per day through your website. Now imagine that your site was unavailable for 12 of those hours due to a technical issue. If you could happily make no sales for those 12 hours then you probably do not need a dedicated server, although it may still be beneficial to opt for one, but if in those 12 hours you could potentially lose out on a significant amount of money then it would be highly recommended to begin using one. In fact, if the cost of upgrading to a dedicated server is what is putting you off, consider the fact that the amount of money it saves you could be more than the cost of the upgrade in the first place.

On a shared server, whether you like it or not, you will be affected by the activities of other companies using that same server. Overload and bad scripts are just two of the many factors that can influence your website, even though they are not directly related to it. What one user does on the server can potentially affect everyone else on it so you may find that your website starts to run very slowly or, in the worst case scenario, crashes altogether during typical peak periods.

If you opt for a dedicated server, however, no one else will be using it, and so the only one that can affect the usability of the website is you. You can schedule maintenance for periods when there are typically very few users online and can ensure that no new software is tested or installed during peak periods. You also have the ability to choose exactly which hardware you want, with the memory and bandwidth needed, to be sure that you have a server able to cope with demand. You also have full administrator access to the server, and so are able to do a full reboot if needed, without going through a third party and adding extra time to the process.

The web hosting company that rents you your dedicated server will most likely also provide excellent technical support, so in the unlikely event that something does go wrong you will be able to phone up and get it sorted out quickly. This service may even be included in the price of your web hosting, although you will need to double-check that at the time of purchase. Managed servers such as these can prove invaluable in the case of technical issues because they save time and money due to not needing to call an outside expert in, plus there is no need to employ specialised IT staff, which can save you money on salaries or training.

Your server will most likely be stored at a colocation facility along with other servers. These facilities go to great lengths to safeguard the security of the servers within, protecting them from fire damage, flood damage, theft and more. You are therefore also benefiting from these services without the need to pay for enhanced security at your place of work.

Overall, dedicated servers greatly reduce your dependency on the web host, and protect you from problems caused by other server users, so they are the ideal choice for reducing risk of website down time. Managed servers ensure that support is on hand when it is needed and using colocation services to store your new dedicated server provides enhanced security, also minimising the risk of irreplaceable data loss.

Sarah Shore writes for ConnetU Ltd on topics related to dedicated servers, such as whether it is best to carry out the maintenance work on your servers yourself or to opt for hassle free managed servers. She also writes about the various methods of ensuring the continual smooth running of your web server, the best of which is probably to take advantage of the extra security that colocation services provide.

What Is Cloud Hosting?

ByStuart P Mitchell

IT professionals and private consumers of technology alike will no doubt be aware of the term cloud computing. A term and a concept that appears to be consuming everything in its path as the future of the IT industry. The following article looks at one incarnation of the technology that offers great potential for enterprise, that of cloud hosting.

Cloud Computing

The concept of cloud computing is one that manifests itself in many ways and covers a broad array of applications and functions. In its simplest sense it refers to end users accessing computing resources they need from a cloud, i.e., a shared pool of IT resources from a remote location made available through the internet. Cloud services are characterised by the fact that they do not require data to be stored on, software installed on, or configuration and preferences to be set on end users' devices. Instead users access resources that are maintained and managed in remote centralised locations by a specialist provider. They are therefore free of physical, geographical and technological constraints and can access the same cloud service wherever they are, across any device - mobile, desktop or tablet - as long as they have an internet connection.

The concept can also be thought of, and indeed referred to, as utility computing. The fact that computing resources, be it hardware or software (see below), are available as a service that can be tapped into on-demand rather than requiring local installations, is akin to a household utility. Indeed, a commonly used analogy is that of electricity. Electricity is generated in a series of centralised locations by specialist providers using advanced equipment and techniques (pooled with wider electricity resources) and accessed through the grid in contrast to a system whereby each consumer builds, installs and maintains their own generator, with each having a finite capacity. In cloud computing the internet is analogous to the electricity grid and the user accesses the computing utility rather than build, install and maintain their own computing resources. Therefore, as with centralised electricity production, it delivers economies of scale for the provider, and consequently cost savings for the user, as well as the ability to access what you need, when you need it; providing solutions that are scalable and responsive to demand.

Generally the end user has no involvement (or need to invest) in the installation and maintenance of the hardware and infrastructure underpinning a cloud service, which is all controlled by the third party provider, but they can have input into software installations and configuration depending on which service they sign up for. These cloud services can be broken down into three tiers:

IaaS - Infrastructure as a Service - offers access to physical computing resource, including disk space on virtual servers and networks whilst leaving the installation and configuration of operating systems and software to the client.

PaaS - Platform as a Service - a platform including physical resource and operating systems together with the software (e.g., a solution stack) required to run a particular computing environment.

SaaS - Software as a Service - the user simply has access to applications running on a cloud platform.

Cloud Hosting

Cloud Hosting is a form of cloud computing, more specifically either IaaS or PaaS, whereby the end user can get access to shared physical resources - servers, networks, bandwidth and supporting infrastructure (plus solution stacks on PaaS) - without the need to purchase, rent or install specific hardware themselves. Typically cloud hosting is employed to serve websites but it can support other enterprise functions and networks.

In essence it is a variant of the wider concept of shared hosting but instead of multiple websites, for example, sharing a single physical server (including a software installation), those multiple sites are hosted across a network of shared servers (and computing resources) managed using software partitions. Cloud Hosting therefore provides scalable on-demand hosting capacity (as the appropriate level of physical resources can be accessed in accordance with demand), where the client doesn't have to worry about the specifics of hardware installations and need only pay for what they use.

VDC - Under the banner of cloud hosting a VDC, or a Virtual Data Center, is again an IaaS which offers enterprises the opportunity to utilise their own networks of servers from the cloud using servers which are defined by software partitions rather than being physically distinct (although the underlying hardware resource is ultimately located within physical data centers).

Whatever demands a website and a business's propositions create, there is always a hosting solution to fit the purpose. For many that will be cloud hosting due to its ability to offer cost efficiencies alongside unparalleled flexibility.

Dedicated Server Hosting and Your Business

Dedicated server hosting has a range of benefits for companies that choose to use it. A dedicated server is, as the name suggests, one that is for you and you only. Businesses may also choose shared web hosting for their websites and online data but this has many pitfalls, not least of them being the fact that your business will be affected by factors outside of your control such as another user over-using their bandwidth allowance and causing your website to slow down. For this and other reasons, choosing a dedicated server is the sensible and reliable choice and is an essential piece of equipment for all but the smallest of companies.

To begin with, let me re-emphasise the fact that a dedicated server is entirely your own. You choose the hardware that you want to purchase, ensuring that you have enough memory, for example, to cope with demand but not so much that you are over paying for something that isn't really needed. If your company expands and you find that the server hardware is no longer able to cope with demand, causing your website to run slowly, all you have to do is upgrade the hardware and the issue will be resolved. With shared web hosting on the other hand you would need to wait for your web hosting provider to upgrade their hardware, a costly move that many providers would be reluctant to do, or you would need to pay an extra monthly fee in order to rent extra server space.

As well as the hardware, the software that goes on it is yours to install, delete and modify to your heart's content. There is no need to get permission from a web hosting company to install anything, and there are no other users on the server who may be reluctant to let you change the software on it, as any change would also affect them too. You can install the software that you and your employees find the easiest to use, leading to a much more efficient workplace.

If your server is not being shared with other users, you do not share the processor or memory, meaning that your website pages will load much faster and will be able to copy with many more website visitors at any one time. If your website gets a significant number of daily or monthly visitors, or if you run a busy eCommerce site, then a dedicated server can greatly enhance your visitors user experience, encouraging sales or repeat visits. Potential customers are more likely to buy from a website that is fast to load and does not have any unscheduled down time, as this reliability reflects back onto the company itself.

A dedicated server is also more secure because you are not at the mercy of activities that other users on a shared server may do. Users on a shared server also share an IP address and if one user does something to get this IP address blacklisted, it will have a major effect on all of the other companies on that server. You also do not need to worry about the risk of hacking or other security issues caused by companies on your server leaving their website unprotected, because the dedicated server is your own. You can therefore choose to install your preferred choice of firewall for absolute security.

Dedicated server hosting also means that you rely less on outside technical support, because you have full access to the root function on the server and can reboot the server or perform other maintenance activities yourself, provided that you have the IT know how to do so. If you are not very technically minded and do not want to employ IT staff, then it may be a wise idea to keep your dedicated service at a colocation data center where technical support is generally available at a lower fee than you would pay to have an expert called out at short notice to your office. This reduces both cost and the length of website down time should any issues occur.

Overall, dedicated server hosting seems like the obvious choice for any business that wants to improve security and lower costs. Companies with little IT knowledge would also benefit from storing their server at a colocation data center for fast technical support when needed. The server hosting provider may also offer IP transit which is another great service worth paying for to keep your website connectivity at its best.

Sarah Shore writes for ConnetU Ltd on the advantages of choosing dedicated server hosting over shared web hosting, which she believes provides a much more reliable and secure service for both the business and its customers. Sarah also loves to write about the benefits of storing your new dedicated server at a colocation data center, many of which also offer additional benefits such as IP transit for your business.

Moving Your Company Into the Cloud Is Easier Than You Think

ByLisa Gecko

Cloud-based computing is quickly becoming the IT model of choice for organizations around the world. The reasons for this are many: it offers all the features and power of a traditional network with a pay-as-you go model with reduced operating and personnel costs, greater efficiency, and virtually unlimited scalability. In addition, a cloud-based network is accessed with a simple, convenient, and familiar Internet-based desktop or mobile platform. If you are new to cloud-based computing and are considering a conversion, it couldn't be easier.

Converting to cloud-based computing can be completed in several quick and easy steps. First, consider converting a single application to try out cloud computing. Then do your research and decide on a cloud hosting service. This includes decisions such as what application and services you want hosted on your network, what capacity you need, and what your budget is. Variables among cloud hosts include pricing, applications and services offered, platforms and underlying hardware types, levels of technical support, and security features. Once you have decided on a cloud host and hosting package, and the application to convert, prepare a conversion timeline and market essential information to your employees. Ultimately the conversion should be seamless for the end user. On the determined date of the conversion, the old application will be put on standby, and the new one will be accessed online over the Internet. Remember to have the host transfer any essential data over to the cloud before conversion. Finally, consider any conversion training requirements for employees. Cloud-based platforms tend to be simpler and easier to operate than a traditional one so necessary training should be minimal.

Your cloud host's technical support contact information and website should be shared with your employees before the conversion so that they know who to call when questions arise. You may want to maintain your traditional application as a backup for a short while. As your employees quickly become accustomed to your cloud-based application, you can then uninstall your in-house application. With no expensive physical hardware or software to maintain, IT staff can then be transferred to supporting roles that better serve the end users. Routine reviews of application usage and services should be performed. Additional services can be purchased as your company grows. And as new cloud-based applications and features become available, you always have to option to add them as you go. Select cloud hosts also offer customized cloud computing solutions based on your specific needs, and you are never stuck with a single platform and can modify your network as needed.

There has never been a better time to convert to a cloud, as the technology and services available have never been more powerful and feature rich, or as affordable. The efficiencies of running multiple virtual servers and applications on less and less hardware has contributed to the reasonable price-point. And this will only improve as both the virtual machines and underlying hardware are continuously improved over time. So save now and save later. When considering the simplicity and cost-savings of converting to a cloud, the choice is easy.
